Emmanuel Lutheran Friends of Music will host an organ recital by Makena James on September 29 at 4 pm in the sanctuary. She will perform pieces by Bach, Louis Vierne, as well as some original compositions. Makena James, BMus, CAGO is a rising organist pursuing a Master of Music degree in organ performance at USC Thornton School of Music, studying with Professor Cherry Rhodes and Dr. Ladd Thomas on a full tuition scholarship. She serves as organist and composer-in-residence at Manhattan Beach Community Church, rings with the LA Bronze handbell ensemble, and plays continuo with the USC Baroque Sinfonia. Makena has performed nationwide and is a prizewinner in several competitions, including the 2021 Buffalo Chapter Organ Competition and the 2024 Quebec International Music Competition. Her composition "Fallen Star" won first prize in the Charleston 20th Century International Music Competition. She holds a colleague certification from the AGO and is a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society.
A reception will follow the concert, hosted by Emmanuel Friends of Music. Admission is free, and a voluntary offering will be received to benefit Emmanuel Friends of Music.
