About this Event
What if the byproducts of making chocolate could become art? Join us for a hands-on biomaterials workshop hosted by Cacao Coyatoc, where cacao bean shells — the very same ones left over from crafting their chocolate — get a second life through the power of mycelium.
This is more than a craft night. We'll open the evening with a talk on the deep cultural roots of cacao and mushrooms in Mayan culture — their spiritual significance, their role in medicine, and their place in the natural world. From there, we'll explore the idea of circular economies: what it means to close the loop, to see waste as a resource, and to create in a way that gives back to the earth.
Then, we get our hands dirty. Each participant will make two things to take home:
- A cacao bioceramic piece — made by mixing cacao bean shells and eggshell powder and pressing the paste into a mold of your choice.
- A living mycelium form — packed with spent mushroom substrate and cacao shells, sealed into a mold, and taken home to grow into a solid, one-of-a-kind object over the following days.
No experience needed — we'll guide you through every step. All materials are provided.
Be part of a circular future — where nothing is wasted, everything has value, and everything returns to the earth.
