About this Event
Sissi & Häran both come from two cultures that loves to cook and eat together. Nothing compares to the familiar feeling of making food collectively for everyone to enjoy. They will be hosting a hands-on workshop to showcase traditional Kimchi making. The focus is on two types of Kimchi : Mat-Kimchi (easy and quick) and Gimjang Kimchi (Traditional style of kimchi to ferment for a long time over the winter). These are the two of the most common Kimchis and with this basic recipe, you'll be able to tweak and develop your own version later!
Learn everything you need to know about the Kimchi making process, which is an integral part of the Korean culture and everything that goes into the labor of work. Sissi will preprare some traditional Chinese scallion pancakes from her childhood to snack on and we will finish by tasting fresh Kimchi with Korean bossam or tofu.
Important details:
- Participants must bring their Cutting board (as big one as possible) and a knife, an apron (or black clothing to avoid Kimchi stains!)
- All other ingredients will be ready prepared
- Each person will bring back home around 1.5-2 kg of Kimchi + full recipe (excel file : able to change the value)
Rough schedule:
13:00 - welcome & snack on some freshly made Chinese scallion pancakes
13:30 - make Kimchi together
15:00 - tasting fresh Kimchi with bossam (Korean boiled pork or tofu)
Your ticket includes the snacks, the Kimchi making, high quality jars to take it back home and the fresh Kimchi tasting with bossam/tofu. Water and tea is provided, all other drinks like beer or wine are extra.
About Sissi
Sissi explores food in context of culture and identity. She writes about different cuisines and approaches cooking by understanding how tradition and heritage have influenced what we call “authenticity” in food. Many of her recipes can be found online at Zeit Magazine or in her first cookbook “Einfach Chinesisch.” On her Instagram @eatinginberlin she focuses on representing cuisines that are often not covered by mainstream media and that are easily overlooked in Berlin. Beside her culinary projects, she loves to travel and challenge her view of the world by listening to other perspectives.
About Häran
Häran serves Korean food inspired by the flavors she remembers from her childhood. She grew up in a family with roots on her father's side in North Korea. Spending her early years with her grandmother, she was fortunate to always enjoy delicious home-cooked meals. After living in Berlin for over a decade, she began to miss those flavors she grew up with. So, she started cooking for herself and sharing those cherished culinary experiences with friends, recreating the tastes and memories of her childhood through pop-up form called @eating_fantasy.
