About this Event

A new generation of Sierra Leonean creatives is on the rise––embracing local culture and centering Sierra Leone in their work with intentionality. Whether it's in the song lyrics or the textiles, or in books Sierra Leonean pride is rising high.

For this inaugural Make Sierra Leone Famous event join us to celebrate the cultural contributions of Sierra Leoneans at home in the diaspora––creatives spearheading Sierra Leone’s cultural revival.

Vickie Remoe presents a Make Sierra Leone Famous Experience showcasing works by Mai Zubairu Burnette (Mai's Kitchen), Akindele Decker (Sierra Leone Icons), Adrian Labor (Sierra Leone Icons), and other Sierra Leonean creatives.

About Our Featured Creatives

Akindele Decker is an award-winning poet and writer. He is co-author and co-founder of the Sierra Leone Icons book series chronicling the contributions of Sierra Leoneans who shaped history. Akindele is a sought-after speaker and cultural educator who supports organizations like the American Association of State and Local History, Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center on Maroon Culture, the Global African Diaspora, and the Sierra Leone National Museum.

Adrian Q. Labor is a civil engineer, co-author, and co-founder of the Sierra Leone Icons book series chronicling the contributions of Sierra Leoneans who shaped history. While on a search of his own ancestry Adrian has developed a passion for genealogy research specifically focused on Freetown's early settlers who founded Sierra Leone's capital city 230 years ago. He continues his research in the 20 Sierra Leoneans Who Shaped History books.

Mai Burnette is a business strategist, chef, and author of Cooking with Mai: Easy to Prepare West African Food. Published in 2020, the book makes authentic Sierra Leonean cuisine accessible to global audiences. Join us for a taste of Swit Salone right out of Mai’s Kitchen.

Vickie Remoe is a multimedia producer on a mission to expand Sierra Leone’s presence on the web since 2005. She is the host of the Vickie Remoe Show, the Make Sierra Leone Famous Podcast, Founder of Swit Salone Dot Com, and author of the early readers Adama Loves Akara and A Print For Ami.
