About this Event
Join us for a special Suicide Prevention Month edition of Makani Movie Night, our monthly gathering where we watch a thought-provoking film and engage in open, respectful discussion afterward. This September, in recognition of Suicide Prevention Month, weβre screening A Silent Voice (2016), a powerful anime film that explores themes of bullying, mental health, forgiveness, and the lasting impact of our actions.
Based on the manga by Yoshitoki Εima, A Silent Voice tells the story of Shoya, a boy who, after bullying a deaf classmate named Shoko in elementary school, finds himself isolated and wracked with guilt years later. As he seeks redemption and attempts to reconnect with her, the film dives deeply into issues of self-worth, loneliness, and the struggle to find healing.
Through its emotional storytelling and poignant animation, A Silent Voice opens up conversations about how we treat others β and ourselves. It reminds us that everyone carries unseen battles, and that empathy, accountability, and connection can be lifelines.
After the screening, weβll have an open discussion where you can share your thoughts, insights, and interpretations of the film in a friendly and welcoming space.
