Maine Inside Out, the social action theater group, performs an original play about incarceration, gun violence, grief, family, trust & time.
About this Event

“Broken Clock” is an original play about incarceration, gun violence, grief, family, trust, and time.

Chasing your mom’s car down the street… being given your first gun… finding brotherhood in the streets… fighting for a loved one to come home from Pr*son… These are a few of the moments from “Broken Clock” expressed through theater, poetry, music, and dance.

The play was first performed in June 2024 for the Lewiston Juneteenth Festival “The City That Carries Us: Pain Streets, and Heartbeats” and later developed in residency at Celebration Barn. The play is created by and continually developed by the performing cast with facilitation by Amanda Huotari. The play also features audio recordings of currently incarcerated MIO artists. Following the performance, the audience will be invited to dialogue with the performers about the themes of the play.

__

Isha Abdullahi, member of the ensemble, MIO community artist, and host for MIO’s Lewiston open mics, has been with the organization since 2018. She has found being part of MIO to be like a family and appreciates the work to give back to the Lewiston community.

Noah Bragg, member of the ensemble and MIO Co-Executive Director, has facilitated theater projects with youth in prisons and schools and in the community. He first joined MIO as a volunteer in 2016 before joining the staff in 2019. Noah has performed in MIO original plays The Weeping City and Broken Clock. He is an alumni of the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.

Mohamud Duale, member of the ensemble and MIO community artist, has been with the organization since 2016 when he was 17 years old. In addition to Broken Clock, he has performed in an MIO play at Lewiston High School. Mo Mo became part of MIO through his best friend and is glad to be supporting youth and others dealing with the justice system and making a difference in the community.

Hassan Hassan, member of the Ensemble and MIO community artist, has been with the organization since 2023. His first ever performance was Broken Clock. One of MIOs’ finest Hosts.

Joseph Jackson, member of the ensemble and MIO Co-Executive Director, has been an MIO leader since 2014, supporting system-impacted young people through art for social change. Joseph is also Executive Director of the Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition and is an accomplished poet.

Tyler Jackson (GRITZ), member of the ensemble and MIO Project Facilitator, has been part of the organization since 2018 and engages youth and peers in MIO’s projects. He also has a background in music production and has professional experience of being part of a creative artistic group. Tyler has been part of the creation and tour of four MIO original plays: Unspoken Truths, Exposed, The Weeping City, and Broken Clock.

Chiara Liberatore, member of the ensemble, MIO Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director, has facilitated theater projects for over 25 years in communities, schools, juvenile detention centers, and prisons in Michigan, Illinois, and Maine. This is Chiara’s first time performing in an MIO play.

Stacy Perez, member of the ensemble and MIO Project Facilitator, is a long-time advocate and community leader/support for youth in multiple states. Stacy has co-facilitated many plays in Maine communities, Portland Public Schools, and Mountain View Correctional Facility, and has supported hundreds of young people/families navigating system involvement. Stacy joined MIO in 2016 as a support for her son and the youth she served for decades in multiple communities. This is where her love for theater began - finding a sense of purpose, belonging, love and family in MIO spaces that was felt by everyone. Stacy was then asked to join the MIO team in 2018. MIO is now the place she calls home.

Maine Inside Out ignites collective creativity and inspires social action by engaging youth and adults impacted by systemic oppression to create and share original theater.
