About this Event
A drop-in letter writing event for political prisoner Malik Muhammad!
KN95/N95 Masks Required & Provided!
Join Portland orgs Critical Resistance PDX, Black & Pink PDX, Don't Shoot Portland, and the Free Malik Now Campaign for an afternoon of letter-writing, info-sharing, and community building.
This is a drop-in event, so come when you're able and stay for as long as you like! We will provide materials and instruction sheets, and lovely folks there to help you every step of the way!
We will have an info-session repeated twice throughout the event, highlighting: Malik's story, The Alabama Prisoners Work Strike, Pr*son abolition, and an interactive phone zap training!
Children are welcome and encouraged to come, and we will provide kid-friendly and engaging activities. We ask that school-aged children wear masks if they are able to, and we will provide kid-sized masks.
Let's gather to learn more about the struggle here in Portland and take the time to connect with Malik and each other :)
We are working on finding an ASL interpreter and will update once we have confirmation.

Organizations:
Black & Pink PDX is a group of outside and inside members (LGBTQIA2S+ and HIV+ people incarcerated in OR) organizing through letter writing, penpal relationships, and a zine publication. We work from an abolitionist framework, recognizing the ways in which mass incarceration is a tool of isolation, suppression, & exploitation by the settler state. We envision and work toward a future where the PIC, and the conditions that created it, will be abolished and replaced with life-affirming structures of support and care
Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the Pr*son industrial complex (PIC) by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. We are a multi-generational, multi-geographical, and multi-racial grassroots organization working to fight against inequality and powerlessness, and we believe that necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure.
Malik Muhammad is a Black/Palestinian direct actionist, radical anarchist, anti-fascist and father, as well as a writer, poet, and musician who is dedicated to liberation.
During the George Floyd uprising, they traveled the country organizing and fighting, and were ultimately kidnapped, ransomed, and held hostage by the state of Oregon, where they have been unjustly held captive on a ten-year sentence, the longest of any political prisoner from the 2020 uprisings.
Don’t Shoot Portland is an arts and education organization that promotes social justice and civic participation. Our year-round programming allows us to advocate for community members facing racism and discrimination by providing legal representation and direct advocacy. Since our inception in 2016, Don’t Shoot Portland has hosted its own dialogues, community forums and workshops focusing on history, archiving and social culture.
