The legacy of the “Mahler Hammer” was set and lives on through Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 in A minor. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, the score for Symphony No. 6 notes that a hammer should strike during the symphony — what the hammer is remains a mystery. Some conductors have opted to have a steel hammer strike steel, but most construct large (massive, you might say) wooden boxes, some the size of a piano crate, and it is struck with a wooden mallet. In whatever way Mahler’s Hammer is constructed, it’s a “striking” moment to behold. The evening will open with a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in d minor featuring Orli Shaham.
