(NL) Yuja Wang is een fenomeen. Dankzij haar virtuositeit, artistieke zeggingskracht en podiumprésence bevindt ze zich als pianiste in de internationale voorhoede. Keer op keer zet ze ongelooflijke technische en fysieke prestaties neer. Maar Wang doet niet solo aan topsport. Door haar geweldige samenspel met het Mahler Chamber Orchestra hangt er magie in de lucht. ‘Stipt als een Zwitsers uurwerk en vol van puur en eenvoudig plezier … Net als chocolade.’ Zo smult deze wereldvedette van de muziek van Maurice Ravel. Wang straalt in het Pianoconcerto in G. De pianiste opent met een zweepslag die het concerto vanaf de eerste maat iconisch maakt. Ravel schreef het vlak na een korte tournee door Amerika. Hij had er duidelijk de oren goed gespitst, want ook in het derde deel zijn groove en jazzy ritmes à la George Gershwin een must. In het wonderlijke tweede deel denkt Ravel dan weer terug aan zijn jeugd in Frans-Baskenland. Wie zich wil voorbereiden op dit concert, kan naar de fenomenale opname van Yuja Wang uit 2015 luisteren. (ENG) Yuja Wang is a phenomenon. Her virtuosity, artistic expressiveness and stage presence ensure her place at the international forefront as a pianist. Time and time again, she gives incredibly technical and physical performances. But Wang does not engage solo in elite sport. Her fabulous interplay with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra fills the air with magic. The globally celebrated musician feasts on Maurice Ravel ‘with the precision of a Swiss timepiece and full of pure and simple fun ... Just like chocolate’. Wang shines in the Piano Concerto in G. The pianist opens with a crack of the whip that makes the concerto iconic from the first beat. Ravel wrote it shortly after a brief tour of America. He had clearly been listening attentively, because groove and jazzy ritmes à la George Gershwin are interwoven into the third movement. In the wonderful second movement, Ravel recalls his youth in the French Basque country. Anyone wishing to prepare for this concert should listen to Yuja Wang’s phenomenal recording from 2015.
