Mahjong for Beginners: From Tiles to Table Workshop

Don’t know a Wind from a Bam? Never played Mahjong—or tried to learn and found yourself a little overwhelmed? This welcoming workshop is designed to take you from Mahjong basics to confidently playing a guided game, one step at a time.
This welcoming introduction to American Mahjong led by Lauren Gross of Mahj the Day is designed to make learning the game approachable, enjoyable, and fun. Together, we’ll uncover the beauty of the tiles, understand the card and suits, learn the flow of the game - including dealing, the Charleston, and calling for a tile. It will get you ready to confidently join the table.
By the end of the session, you’ll have the foundation you need to start playing.
All are welcome. Whether you are a novice or ready to take your game to the next level, come ready to learn, play, and have fun in a supportive and fun environment.
This session is part of a two-part Mahjong experience. While attending both sessions is a great way to build your skills and deepen your understanding of the game, each session can be registered for individually.
Session includes:
• Full Mahjong table setup
• National Mah Jongg League Card provided for play
• Hands-on instruction and guided practice
Bring a friend or come on your own! Bring Your Own favorite sip, and a sense of fun—we’ll provide the light refreshments, good company, and plenty of Mahjong fun.
When registering, please use the “Special Instructions” field to share your Mahjong experience level (e.g., brand new to the game, familiar with the basics, or have played before). This will help us group participants with similar experience levels for the best learning experience.
