Mahjong 102: Guided Play (8 Seats Only)
About this Event
Real games. Help when you need it.
Mahjong 102 is guided play, the step between your first lesson and playing on your own. You play real hands at a real table, and your instructor is right there to answer questions, talk through decisions, and catch mistakes as they happen.
Who it is for
You have taken a Mahjong 101, or you understand the basics: the tiles, the card, the Charleston, and how a hand is played. You are past the beginner stage but not quite ready to play on your own. If you can get through a hand and still have questions, this is your table.
Still a small group
Guided play is capped at 8 players. That is two tables of four, with your instructor moving between them, so help is never more than a few steps away.
What you will practice
- Choosing a hand from the card
- What to pass and what to keep in the Charleston
- When to call a tile and when to wait
- Using jokers and making joker exchanges
- Knowing when to switch hands
- Keeping up with the pace of a real game
What you leave with
- Real games played, start to finish
- Answers to the questions that only come up mid-hand
- The confidence to take a seat at open play
Your instructor
I'm Elise Victor, and teaching is what I do. I have taught adults for many years, including at the university level, so I know how to turn a complicated game into steps that make sense the first time you hear them. I'm also a player. I compete in tournaments and have extensive league experience. I founded Briar House Mahjong and Mahjong NTX. Mahjong NTX is a year-round community where you can find people to play mahjong with on your schedule. I teach American mahjong to the National Mah Jongg League standard, with the official rules and the current card, so what you practice at my table works at any table. I'm also pursuing my instructor credentials through the Mahj Life Instructor Guild. Expect patience, straight answers, and an instructor who wants you to walk out ready for your next game.
