Mahjong 101: Small-Group Beginner Lesson (4 Seats Only)
About this Event
Four seats. One table. Understand the game.
American Mahjong 101 is a 2.5-hour beginner lesson for a group of four. No experience needed. Everything is provided. $60 per seat.
Why only four
Most beginner classes seat eight or more. This one stops at four. You sit at one table with your teacher for the entire lesson, you handle the tiles the whole time, every question gets answered, and every mistake gets caught while it still matters.
What you will learn
- The objective of the game and how a hand is won
- The tiles and suits
- How to read the card, made simple
- Setting up the table, building the wall, and dealing
- The Charleston
- Basic rules and table etiquette
- How a full hand is played, start to finish
What you leave with
- Real hands played, not a demo watched
- A take-home 101 guide so it sticks
- A clear next step: where to find guided play, open play, and people to play with
Your teacher
I'm Elise Victor, and teaching is what I do. I have taught adults for many years, including at the university level, so I know how to turn a complicated game into steps that make sense the first time you hear them. I'm also a player. I compete in tournaments and have extensive league experience. I founded Briar House Mahjong and Mahjong NTX. Mahjong NTX is a year-round community where you can find people to play mahjong with on your schedule. I teach American mahjong to the National Mah Jongg League standard, with the official rules and the current card, so what you learn at my table works at any table. I'm also pursuing my instructor credentials through the Mahj Life Instructor Guild. Expect patience, straight answers, and a teacher who wants you to walk out ready for your next game.
