Raga Mala Calgary is thrilled to welcome to Calgary for the first time, Mahathi, disciple of the legendary Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. Hear her powerful voice fill the evening with Carnatic music, accompanied with the sounds of violin by Arun Ramamurthi, mridangam by Delhi Sairam, and kanjira by Anirudh Athreya.

This event is FREE for Raga Mala Members, but all attendees require a ticket. So, if you're a member, please register for your free ticket through Eventbrite. For non-members, we charge $15 for students and seniors, and $20 for everyone else. Please bring your valid student ID if you've purchased a student ticket. Limited door tickets will be available. Artist Biographies
Mahathi:
One of the most celebrated Carnatic
musicians and play back singers of
today’s generation Smt. S. Mahathi hails
from a family of musicians. Her father ,
Sri. Thiruvaiyaru P. Sekar is one of the
senior most disciples of Dr. M.
Balamurali Krishna and her mother Smt.
Vasanthi Sekar is a flautist , disciple of
Flute Sri. Mali and Smt . N . Kesi.
Mahathi’s great gandfather is Sangeetha kalanidhi Pazhamaaneri
Swaminatha Iyer a renowned violinist. Mahathi s great grandfather
comes in the 8th generation of the Saint Thyagaraja ‘s Sishya
paramapara. Mahathi is a childprodigy who started identifying
classical Ragas from her tender age of 1.5 yrs.
An A grade artiste of the All India Radio and Doordarshan, Mahathi is
a recipient of several prestigious awards like “ ISAI PEROLI “ the most
coveted title from Kartik Fine arts, VANI KALA NIPUNA from Sri
Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, YUVA KALA BHARATHI from Bharath
Kalachar, ISAI CHUDAR OLI, INNISAI ILAVARASI and many others.
She is also playback singer who has more than 600 film songs to her
credit IN TAMIL TELUGU MALAYALAM AND KANNADA and is a
recipient of the TAMIL NADU GOVT STATE AWARD FOR THE BEST
FEMALE PLAY BACK SINGER FOR THE YEARS 2008 and 2009.
Introduced by Maestro Ilayaraja , she has worked with leading music
directors , A R Rahman, Harris Jayaraj, Vidyasagar , Dhina Yuvan Shankar
Raja , Bharadwaj, Gurukiran, Devi Sri prasad and many others.
She is the voice behind many hit songs like Aiyyayo Pudichirukku,
Mudhal Mazhai, nenje Nenje, yammadi Athadi, Jabillamavo etc in
various languages.
Arun Ramamurthi:
Arun Ramamurthi is a senior disciple of the renowned musician Delhi Shri P Sunder Rajan. Arun is a sought after violin accompanist across the US and has had the honor of accompanying several senior Carnatic musicians such as Sangita Kalanidhi Padmabushan Madurai Sri T. N. Seshagopalan, Sangita Kalanidhi Padmabushan Smt. Sudha Raghunathan, and Sangita Kalanidhi Neyveli Sri Santhanagopalan, to name a few. Arun is also a trained vocalist having learned from Smt. Padma Kutty as well as the late Sri Vairamangalam Lakshminarayanan.
In addition to performing, he has been keen on giving back to his community and the next generation of young musicians. For the past 15 years he has been teaching violin to aspiring kids. In 2015, he inaugurated MaargaUSA, a non-profit organization that provides a platform for young budding musicians. He also served as a board member for the premiere Carnatic organization in Los Angeles, SIMA.
Delhi Sairam:
Delhi Sri Sairam is a disciple of Mridangam Maestro Sangitha Kalanidhi Dr. Thiruvarur Sri Bakthavatsalam. He is a post graduate First Rank holder in Rhythmology from the University of Madras. He has also won several awards like the 'Kalaimamani' by the government of Tamil Nadu, Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from the Sangeet Natak Academy, Yuva Kala Bharathi from Bharat Kalachar, Best Senior Mridangist Award from the Music Academy Chennai, Laya Lavanya Trust Award from Padmabhushan Umayalapuram Sri Sivaraman to name a few.
His energetic yet sensitive style of accompanying vocalists andinstrumentalist alike has won him critical acclaim all over India andabroad. During the past 20yrs he has given thousands of performancesaccompanying eminent senior artists and promising and upcomingmusicians. He has accompanied veterans like Flute Ramani, T. V. Sankaranarayanan, Bombay Jayashri Ramnath, Ranjani Gayathri, Sudha Raghunathan and many senior artists. He has toured the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Abhu Dhabi with several artists and performedat prestigious international festivals and venues.
Anirudh Athreya
Hailing from an illustrious musicallineage, V Anirudh Athreya is the greatgrandson of legends Sri Papa KSVenkatramiah and Alathur Sri Subbier. His grandfather Vidwan Sri V. Thyagarajan was also a renowned violinist. Seeing Anirudh’s keen interest in rhythm and percussion as a child, his grand uncle, Kanjira Maestro Sri V. Nagarajan, a pioneer in the art, instantaneously volunteered to teach him to play the Kanjira.
His skills were further honed and polished by Mridangam wizard Dr. T. K. Murthy. Majestic in tone, his speciality is accompanying for music and being sensitive to the melody around him. He has performed extensively in India and across the world. Today, Anirudh has the unique distinction of being the youngest Kanjira artise to have accompanied all senior artiestes in the field of Carnatic music along with many Violin and Mridangam stalwarts.
He holds the rare distinction of having performed at the UN in 2016, along with the legendary Sudha Ragunathan in connection with the World Non-Violence Day cleebrations and stamp release to commemorate 50 years of Bharat Ratna Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmni's performance at the UN.
