About this Event
"You wouldn't think that A Nightmare On Elm Street really needed musical numbers but the sad fact of the matter is that you'd be very, very wrong..." - Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop!
Are you ready for Freddy? Are you ready for the Bollywood musical remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street? (We’ll say it again: THE BOLLYWOOD MUSICAL REMAKE OF A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET!!) Prepare yourself….for MAHAKAAL (1994)!
You’ll be singing “One, two, Shakaal’s coming for you!” after you experience the ridiculously entertaining, Bollywood grindhouse joy ride that is Shyam and Tulsi Ramsay’s (of the legendary Ramsay Brothers – the family famous for their cult horror movies throughout the 70s and 80s) riotous take on Wes Craven’s horror classic. If you ever watched the Nightmare series and thought “Gee, this is great but what it really needs is a Michael Jackson impersonator and, y’know what? Give Freddy a mullet while you’re at it ” – have we got the film for you!
Out of all the Bollywood horror films that were inspired by the worldwide phenomenon of Wes Craven's A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (yes, there is more than one!), MAHAKAAL is the most brazenly outrageous. The film finds Anita and her friends battling Shakaal, a horrifically disfigured dream-stalker with a razor-clawed glove. After the brutal M**der of her kid sister, Anita begins to have horrible nightmares where Shakaal torments her. Once awake, she finds that the injuries suffered in her dreams have manifested into the physical world. Although her family and friends dismiss her warnings, it’s not long before people around her are picked off one by one by this hideously disfigured being. Can anyone or anything bring an end to the carnage?!
A mind-altering cocktail of elements from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 1-5, DAY OF THE DEAD, and THE TERMINATOR, MAHAKAAL is awash with Argento-esque neon, elaborate effects, and joyous musical segments.
Newly restored and never before available in North American theaters, this is going to be a total, bonkers blast that MUST be seen in the theater with an audience! Don’t sleep on it…or Shakaal will get you!
Dirs. Tulsi & Shyam Ramsay, India, 1994, 132 mins, Not Rated (Suitable for Adult Audiences Only), English Subtitles, Digital.
