About this Event
Whether you're refreshing your love of the craft, or want to explore black & white film photography and darkroom printing for the first time, this exciting two-Saturday workshop is designed for photographers of all skill levels, from beginner to expert.
Through a special partnership with the photography department at Phoenix College, this workshop will be held on site in their classroom and state-of-the-art darkroom — the perfect location to learn, shoot, and create. Best of all, your registration includes everything you need to participate — use of a 35mm camera, film, darkroom equipment, chemistry and photo paper. All you have to do is sign up and show up!
Jennifer Laffoon, Coordinator of the Photography Program at Phoenix College, will expertly lead you through the entire workshop. We’ll go over camera operation, including light and exposure in manual mode, then you’ll be off on a shooting session, followed by developing negatives, and darkroom printing techniques. Each attendee will get plenty of individual attention and scheduled time with the equipment. While participants are taking turns in the darkroom, the others will have the chance to create photograms.

About the Instructor:
Jennifer Laffoon is a fine arts photographer specializing in both traditional and digital mediums. She serves as a residential faculty member and the Coordinator of the Photography Program at Phoenix College. Jennifer holds an MFA from the University of Arizona and a BFA from The Museum School of Fine Art at Tufts University.
With 20+ years of teaching experience, Jennifer has also taught at the University of South Carolina, where she led the Photography program in the Media Arts. Her work has been exhibited nationally, and she has delivered lectures on her photographic series as well as on the history of photography at the Columbia Museum of Fine Arts and the Phoenix Art Museum.
Currently, Jennifer is developing a new series that delves into the complexities of loss, aging, and the everyday. Through a juxtaposition of seemingly disparate images, she constructs narratives that weave together personal experiences with the critical examination of media judgments and the blurring of memory. The series employs humor and raw emotion to depict the interactions and judgments we all encounter, offering a poignant commentary on societal perceptions of the self and our evolving identities within contemporary culture.
