Madison Sounds presents Young Concert Artists

Madison Avenue Baptist Church proudly presents an evening of chamber music featuring artists from the Young Concert Artists roster—Risa Hokamura, violin, and Anthony Trionfo, flute—on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 7:30 PM in the church’s historic sanctuary in Murray Hill.

The program highlights masterworks for violin, flute, and piano, including Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute and Piano, César Cui’s Trio for Violin, Flute, and Piano, Op. 56, Franz Schubert’s Rondo Brilliant for violin and Piano in B minor D.895 and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Five Pieces for Violin, Flute, and Piano.

At the piano will be Aza Sydykov, MABC’s Minister of Music and Director of Education and Public Programs

About the Artists

Risa Hokamura, Violin

Risa Hokamura began studying violin at the age of three and, by ten, had won top prizes in competitions across Japan.

At seventeen, she gained international recognition as the winner of the 2018 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, also receiving the Tannery Pond Concerts Prize, Ruth Laredo Memorial Prize, and Ronald A. Asherson Prize.

That same year, she won the Silver Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, performing with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin.

She has since appeared as a concerto soloist with numerous orchestras in the United States and Japan and made recital debuts at Merkin Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater in Washington, D.C., and Kioi Hall in Tokyo, where she performed all six Ysaÿe Sonatas.

An avid chamber musician, she has appeared at Music@Menlo, Newport Classical, Clarion Concerts, and Caramoor, among many others.

Hokamura studies at the Manhattan School of Music and performs on the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius (Nippon Music Foundation) and the 1734 “Ames–Totenberg” Stradivarius (Rare Violins in Consortium).

Anthony Trionfo, Flute

Flutist Anthony Trionfo, First Prize Winner of the 2016 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, has been praised by The New York Times for his “breezily virtuosic” playing.

He has appeared as a soloist with leading orchestras including the Edmonton Symphony, Grant Park Festival Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Santa Fe Pro Musica.

Equally committed to education and advocacy, Trionfo curated Learning to Listen, a panel on the Black experience in classical music, and founded Illuminate!, a series exploring race, queerness, and pedagogy in music.

He is co-founder of the Umoja Flute Institute and tours North America with the Dorian Wind Quintet.

During the 2025–26 season, he returns to Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall for the Young Concert Artists Season Finale.

Aza Sydykov, Piano

Aza Sydykov is an internationally recognized Kyrgyz-American pianist, chamber musician, educator, conductor, and cultural advocate.

Educated at the Central Music School of the Moscow State Conservatory, the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, and Mannes at The New School, he was mentored by legendary pianist Nikolai Arnoldovich Petrov.

Sydykov made his orchestral debut at seventeen with the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia and later became the first Kyrgyz musician to present a solo recital at Carnegie Hall.

He is a First Prize and Grand Prix Laureate of the Euterpe International Piano and Chamber Music Competition in Italy, where his artistry was recognized for exceptional technical command, stylistic authority, and expressive depth.

He currently serves as Minister of Music and Director of Education and Public Programs at Madison Avenue Baptist Church, where he also curates concerts, masterclasses, and educational initiatives in collaboration with leading institutions.
