Sail aboard the Schooner Madeline! Free Opportunity!
About this Event

The Maritime Heritage Alliance offers complimentary sails to individuals and local non-profit groups when the Schooner Madeline is in her home on Discovery Pier in Traverse City, MI. This is our way of saying "thank you" to the Grand Traverse community for their support and fulfilling our Mission.

Madeline is a reconstruction of the1845 Schooner that plied the waters of Grand Traverse Bay (and beyond) during the 19th century. This small trading schooner provided an inspiring local story. During the winter of 1851-1852 Madeline and her small crew of immigrants secluded themselves in Bowers Harbor just north of Traverse City. Determined to better themselves, they hired a local teacher and learned to read and write in the boat’s hold.

Today’s Schooner Madeline was built by volunteers to provide an unique educational opportunity. She serves as another floating classroom where all generations can learn about Great Lakes maritime history and traditions.

For 30+ years Madeline and her all-volunteer crew have manifested the vision of her builders. She has sailed on all five Great Lakes and visited over seventy ports. Thousands of visitors have walked her deck to learn about maritime history and the Great Lakes Water highway. From Discovery Pier they offer free sails so that many may experience Great Lakes history and traditions under sail.

A sail on Madeline is a unique experience. Her construction is that of a 19th century Great Lakes wooden schooner. Her trained crew demonstrates traditional sailing skills and shares their passion for Great Lakes maritime history. Underway guests may help raise a sail and take a turn on the wheel. Or just sit back and enjoy the beauty and the wonder of our of West Grand Traverse Bay and our fresh water seas.

CANCELLATIONS: Demand for sails aboard Madeline far exceed our capacity and it is our goal to ensure that every spot on every Heritage Sail is filled.
