An evening of folkloric time travel and songs for an improvising orchestra. We are very excited to host this brand new ensemble! The brainchild of Phil Smith the excellent musician, radio broadcaster (radio 3) and more. He sent us the demos (same demos he sent to his musicians) which were a gorgeous mix of sung instrument parts, snippets of piano and spoken directions for the music that was to be played. We were an instant YES!
Made / Found Ensemble
Made / Found Ensemble play a new suite of music by Brighton-based pianist-composer-vocalist Phil Smith. Especially assembled for the night, the group’s fifteen-strong line-up includes members of Rose Hill regulars Safehouse alongside local avant-jazz outfit Hill Collective. Intimate songcraft and wild free improvisation combine in new settings of words by the likes of Christina Rossetti, Robert Frost and Lao Tzu. The ensemble’s set will also feature arrangements of tunes from Tagebuch, Phil’s 2024 album released via London’s Kit Records.
Praise for Tagebuch:
“incredible… lush… beautiful record” – Gilles Peterson, Worldwide FM
“a beautiful mix of jazz, musique concrète and more” – Sara Mohr-Piesch, BBC Radio 3

Marlais
Marlais is a singer, musician and producer living in Berlin. His music combines drone-inspired ambient soundscapes with folkloristic storytelling. Drawing on the oral heritage of England and Ireland, he sings the traditional tales of a bygone era and at the same time challenges the aesthetics of the genre.
