I mere end fire årtier har den legendariske Guyana-fødte britiske producer Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser aka Mad Professor været en kompromisløs drivkraft i dubuniverset. Hans ikoniske Ariwa-studie i London har dannet ramme om nogle af genrens mest skelsættende produktioner og remix, og han står som en central figur i dubmusikkens anden generation. Her har han arbejdet med ikoner som Lee “Scratch” Perry, Jah Shaka, Pato Banton og Horace Andy, og samtidig sat sit præg på kunstnere langt uden for reggaeens univers. Navne som Massive Attack, Sade, Grace Jones og Perry Farrell har alle lagt deres musik i hænderne på hans transformerende produktioner.
Mad Professors lydunivers er kendetegnet ved dybe basspor, hypersensitiv rumklang og en legende tilgang til studieteknik, der konstant udvider dubbens horisont og på én gang lyder oldschool og futuristisk. Når Mad Professor går på scenen, bliver mixerpulten et instrument i sig selv og publikum inviteres ind i en levende proces, hvor beats, ekkoer og bassens pulserende varme konstant genfødes i nye former. With a singular command of the mixing desk and an unshakeable curiosity for the outer edges of sound, Mad Professor has shaped dub music as we know it today. We are honoured to present the legendary, visionary Guyanese-British producer as he invites the audience into his cosmos of deep, hypnotic, and timeless dub at ALICE this February.
For more than four decades, the Guyana-born British producer Neil Joseph Stephen Fraser – better known as Mad Professor – has been a relentless driving force in the world of dub. His iconic Ariwa Studio in London has hosted some of the genre’s most defining productions and remixes, and he stands as a central figure in dub’s second generation. Here, he has worked with icons such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, Jah Shaka, Pato Banto, and Horace Andy, while also leaving his mark on artists far beyond the reggae sphere. Names like Massive Attack, Sade, Grace Jones, and Perry Farrell have all entrusted their music to his transformative touch.
Mad Professor’s sonic universe is defined by deep basslines, hyper-sensitive reverbs, and a playful approach to studio technique that continuously expands the horizons of dub, sounding at once old-school and futuristic. When he performs live, the mixing desk becomes an instrument in its own right, and the audience is invited into a living process where beats, echoes, and bass warmth are constantly reborn in new forms.
