Slow down and look closer in this small-group macro photography workshop exploring flowers, water, texture, light and tiny details.
About this Event

Macro photography asks us to slow down, move closer and notice the worlds hiding in plain sight.

Join photographer Lucy Sager of Field Notes Photography for a two-hour, small-group macro photography workshop on the Alberta Legislature grounds.

With a maximum of just four participants, this is a hands-on photography session with plenty of time to work with your camera, experiment, ask questions and receive individual guidance.

Using the Legislature gardens, flowers, fountains, water, textures and seasonal details as our subject matter, we'll explore both the technical and creative sides of close-up photography.

We'll work with:

  • Aperture and depth of field
  • Finding and controlling focus
  • Working with natural light
  • Creating clean, intentional backgrounds
  • Composition at a smaller scale
  • Photographing flowers, water, texture and detail
  • Making creative choices

You do not need a dedicated macro lens to participate. Bring the camera and lenses you already own, and we'll explore what they're capable of. If you do own a macro lens, absolutely bring it.

This workshop is suitable for photographers who understand the basic operation of their camera as well as newer photographers who would like some hands-on help. You don't need to arrive knowing the “right” settings, that's part of what we're there to explore.

Small by design

This workshop is limited to four photographers.

Rather than teaching from the front of a classroom, Lucy will photograph alongside you, help you work through your individual camera settings and challenges, and encourage you to experiment with different ways of making an image.

Bring your camera, charged batteries, an empty memory card and any lenses you'd like to experiment with. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.

Most importantly, bring your curiosity.

Sometimes an entirely new photographic world is only a few inches away.

Please note we will meet in front of the QE Building to start our time together.

Small groups.

Interesting places.

Photography without the intimidation.

A note about weather
Photography doesn't require perfect weather. Clouds, light rain and changing conditions can create beautiful opportunities for macro photography, so this workshop will go ahead in light weather. Please dress appropriately for the conditions.
If severe or unsafe weather makes it unreasonable to proceed, participants will be contacted and the workshop will be rescheduled.
