About this Event

LEARN TO MILL WITH PHIL - 2-session class

Saturday and Sunday, November 15th + 16th

9a - 5p (with an hour for lunch)

Non-Members $750

Members $640

Materials fee: $25

Milling is a subtractive manufacturing process and type of machining that uses rotating cutting tools (mills) to remove material from a workpiece, creating shapes and features like flat surfaces, slots, and grooves - almost like sculpting. A milling machine holds a workpiece and moves it against a rotating cutter, which removes material in a controlled way to create the desired shape or feature. Milling machines are used for a wide range of manufacturing applications, from creating simple parts to complex, high-precision components and can be used on materials such as metal or wood.

In this 2-day class:

Day 1: Students will learn how to square or qualify materials, which is the process of making the surfaces parallel/perpendicular. We will go over deburring and surface finishing, different tools/mills, hole making, precision and learning how to measure.

Day 2: Students will mill their own precision brass dice to take home.

Note: this class does NOT certify students to use the milling machines on their own - for anyone interested in continuing to use the equipment, further instruction will be required.

PREREQUISITES:

This is open to anyone 18 and up. Please wear hair tied back, closed-toe boots, jeans, and NO loose clothing/long sleeves - nothing that can be caught in rotating tools.

MATERIALS:

Your materials fee pays for aluminum, brass and any metals used. We provide PPE, including safety glasses.

INSTRUCTOR BIO:

Phil Koenig has been a machinist for 40 years and is a long-time Makerspace instructor. In his long career, he has run several businesses and shops including the machine shop at Honeybee Robotics where he made gadgets for space travel. Phil also bakes an amazing loaf of bread.

REFUNDS/CANCELLATIONS:

Class size limited to 4 students. Minimum 2 students. We reserve the right to cancel the class if we do not have a minimum amount of students so please purchase your tickets early. If we cancel, we will refund you in full and notify you. You may cancel and get a refund up to three days before the class. After that, refunds are contingent on us being able to fill your seat. Under no circumstances do we offer refunds to individuals who cancel on the same day; this ruins the party for everyone. If you cancel, please note that Eventbrite fees are non-refundable.
