In 1939, contralto Marian Anderson faced a pivotal moment in history when she performed at the Lincoln Memorial after being barred from Constitution Hall due to her race. Her powerful voice resonated in the open air and with the American spirit, transcending barriers. Join us for a special screening of Voice of Freedom, a compelling documentary that weaves together Anderson’s remarkable life and this historic event, while exploring fundamental questions of talent, race, fame, democracy and the American soul.Dr. Louise Toppin, Professor of Music and University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, with a focus on opera singer and groundbreaking civil rights pioneer Marian Anderson, will be performing works that were touched by Anderson’s life.
