Wounded light (ongoing)
Using specific investigative techniques in forensics, the project attempts to investigate the recent past of the Jiu Valley, an area rich in natural resources that has been exploited for over a century and a half. The mining center experienced a decline during the years of communism as a result of some economic decisions not adapted to reality, accelerated in the 90s when the miners, manipulated by the political elite, became a force in Mineriada, distancing Romania from Western Europe for a long time.
The theme of the project brings to the fore the organic relationship of the miners with the darkness of the work space and with the fragility of their own life in the face of imminent death at every entrance to the shaft. Through this routine, the surface area becomes a metaphor for how to relate to life and death.
As Florin Oprescu mentions in the preface of Wounded lIght album, ”…Look patiently and openly at Mădălin’s photographs. His sequences are cutouts from the present towards the past, retrospections to a world, which apparently does not have anything in common with ours. Apparently, they have a historical function, remembering a social event from many years ago, from the democratic youth of Romania. Mineriada”
