Funk, instrumental, “groove”
Formed a decade ago in Switzerland by Bulgarian-born brothers Stef and Yavor Lilov, L’Eclair has steadily built a reputation for genre-defying, rhythm-forward instrumentals shaped by early influences in Eastern European folk and a deep love of sonic experimentation. Now leading the band themselves, guitarist/keyboardist Stef and drummer Yavor deliver Cloud Drifter, their fourth album and debut for Innovative Leisure—a record that marries modern production with nostalgic textures, balancing robotic tightness with raw humanity. Crafted over two meticulous years, Cloud Drifter is the first L’Eclair project to introduce vocals, featuring a diverse roster of collaborators including Pink Siifu, Girl Named GOLDEN, and Phoebe Coco, along with new member Inès Mouzoune.
From future club anthems like “MEMPHIS” to the trap-tinged “Nova Umbra,” the album reflects a dynamic evolution in sound, bolstered by live instrumentation, lush string arrangements, and a willingness to push each guest artist beyond their comfort zone. Pink Siifu’s freestyle on the jazz-inflected “Replica M001,” for instance, marks L’Eclair’s first foray into hip-hop, while the band’s sessions at London’s Total Refreshment Centre added further depth and spontaneity to the recording process. With nearly 900,000 KEXP views and a growing global fanbase, L’Eclair continues to expand its musical universe—inviting listeners to both dance and reflect as they drift through this imaginative, emotionally resonant soundscape.
