Join Olivia Chamoun Canavan and her band for a joyful celebration of vocal jazz, through the lens of improvisation, storytelling, and swing.
This special evening will feature timeless, well-loved standards from the Great American Songbook, with a spotlight on vocalese - the art of setting lyrics to improvised instrumental solos, a vibrant and long-standing tradition in vocal jazz. Vocalese can be soulful, witty, and brimming with energy and excitement.
The show includes iconic works by vocalese pioneers such as Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, and Australian-born legend Anita Wardell, alongside original vocalese pieces that highlight Olivia’s own voice as a lyricist and passionate interpreter of the tradition.
Olivia Chamoun Canavan is an emerging presence in Melbourne’s jazz scene, celebrated for her improvisational abilities and distinctive original artistry. A graduate of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and recipient of the 2018 Monash Jazz Music Scholarship, Olivia has steadily carved her path over the past seven years. She released her acclaimed debut album Still in 2022 and has collaborated with renowned Australian artists such as Gary Pinto, Jack Earle, Cannonball Band, and Rob Burke, as well as international jazz greats Tim Ries (US), Terri Lyne Carrington (US), Ambrose Akinmusire (US), Linda Oh (US), and Dave Douglas (US).
