About this Event
The legendary Lynne Tillman returns to Foyles for a discussion about her masterful novel, American Genius, A Comedy, with frieze editor Andrew Durbin.
Resident in what may be an artist’s retreat or a psychiatric hospital, Tillman’s narrator interweaves tales of her life with ruminations on her varied and eccentric preoccupations – from the Manson family to the Zulu alphabet – all written in Tillman’s characteristically beguiling and intelligent prose. A tale of a fascinating consciousness and a study in the revelations and the limits of imagination, American Genius, A Comedy, available in the UK for the first time, is Tillman’s hypnotic and compelling modernist masterpiece.
Lynne Tillman is a novelist, short story writer, essayist and critic. Her work includes the novels Haunted Houses and Men and Apparitions and the memoir Mothercare. Her work has been shortlisted for National Book Critics Circle Awards in both the Fiction and Criticism categories. She currently writes a column for frieze and is a Professor and Writer-in-Residence at the University of Albany. She lives in New York City.
Tillman will be in conversation with Andrew Durbin, the editor-in-chief of frieze. He is the author of MacArthur Park (2017) and Skyland (2020), both from Nightboat Books. His biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek will be published in 2025.
This event will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. Doors will open from 6:45pm.
