About this Event

Celeste Ng's OUR MISSING HEARTS is a love letter to public libraries and a forewarning of fascism's slow then sudden creep. In this dystopian future, art, literature and love are the countermeasures to nationalized hate and horrors. The story charts the radicalization of a dissident poet and its effect on her realtionship with her young son and husband. Described by Penguin as, "an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s about the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and the power of art to create change."

The Ladies Who Lit will be discussing OUR MISSING HEARTS inside Chicago-based artist Krista Franklin's "Library of Love," part of her current "Solo(s)" exhibition at DePaul Art Museum. "Library of Love" is Krista's visual love letter to a city in turmoil, in which visitors are invited to enter a home library setting filled with books about love. There is music playing and comfortable furniture; there are fresh flowers that Franklin herself tends to weekly. Beauty flourishes here, amidst the city’s chaos, just as there is still beauty to be found in the dystopian future Ng explores in OUR MISSING HEARTS.

We are thrilled to be welcoming Krista Franklin herself to the evening's programming.
