The Luther S. Allison Trio
Dynamic, soulful jazz rooted in blues, gospel, bebop, and swing — pianist Luther S. Allison and his trio bring a sound the New York Times says is "reamplifying the tradition of jazz piano" for a new generation.
The Performers:
Luther S. Allison — piano
Garrett Baxter — bass
Ken Mastrogiovanni — drums
About the Artists:
A multi-instrumentalist equally skilled on piano and drum set, Luther S. Allison has emerged as one of the leading jazz voices of his generation. The Charlotte, North Carolina native — trained at the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University — has toured and recorded with artists including José James, Jazzmeia Horn, and Samara Joy, and appears on Joy's GRAMMY-winning single "Tight." His debut album, I Owe It All To You, earned a 4.5-star rating from DownBeat, which praised his playing as having "no weak points in his arsenal."
Beyond performing, Allison is a respected educator and curator, having served as Adjunct Jazz Faculty at The Calhoun School in New York City and led performances in partnership with the Louis Armstrong Museum and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. As a composer, he was commissioned by Wynton Marsalis to write an original work for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and he recently appeared as both actor and musician in Maggie Gyllenhaal's film The Bride.
On bass, Garrett Baxter is one of the many young and exciting voices in Portland's jazz scene. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies: Bass Performance from the University of Oregon in 2020, receiving the Outstanding Undergraduate Jazz Performer award that same year. Baxter has performed in bands led by Idit Shner, Roger Woods, and Joe Manis, among others, and had the opportunity to perform in the Javon Jackson Quartet at the Jazz Station. During his time at UO, he shared the stage and studied with musical inspirations including Linda May Han Oh, Ben Wendel, Walter Smith III, and Kendrick Scott, while playing in both the Oregon Jazz Ensemble and the JazzArts Oregon Combo. Baxter has also studied privately in Portland with Chuck Israels, the acclaimed bassist best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio from 1961 to 1966.
Rounding out the trio is Oregon-based drummer Ken Mastrogiovanni, a rising force known for bringing a modern, genre-transcending sensibility to the drums. A University of Oregon faculty member with an M.M. in Jazz Studies, Mastrogiovanni has performed with artists including Jaleel Shaw, George Colligan, and Geoffrey Keezer, and produces boundary-pushing beats under the name "kenthemaestro."
With Allison's masterful, tradition-rich playing and a rhythm section built for depth and drive, this trio promises an evening of jazz that's both deeply rooted and thrillingly alive.
