Lusophone Book Club @ Good Company Books

Event Language: Hosted in English but readers are welcome to read in both the Portuguese original and the English translation.

Here at Good Company, we are passionate about translations, especially of Lusophone authors. That's why we wanted to start this book club, to further our community by exploring the multicultural literary traditions, and the beauty of the Portuguese language.

Book of the month: The Passion According to G.H by Clarice Lispector

About the Book:

G.H., a well-to-do Rio sculptress, enters the room of her maid, which is as clear and white "as in an insane asylum from which dangerous objects have been removed". There she sees a cockroach - black, dusty, prehistoric - crawling out of the wardrobe and, panicking, slams the door on it. Her irresistible fascination with the dying insect provokes a spiritual crisis, in which she questions her place in the universe and her very identity, propelling her towards an act of shocking transgression.

Clarice Lispector's spare, deeply disturbing yet luminous novel transforms language into something otherworldly, and is one of her most unsettling and compelling works.

By Metro: We're situated a 5-minute walk from the Campo Pequeno metro (Yellow line) and a 10-minute walk from the Alameda metro (Green & Red lines).

By Bus: There are many convenient bus options 2 blocks away from us on Avenida República, with the closest stop to our store being Campo Pequeno-Av. Republica.

By Bike: If you're using the Gira public bicycles, there is a docking station right across the street (#431 - Rua do Arco Cego / Av. Magalhães Lima).

By Car: There is a paid parking lot across the street, between Rua Arco do Cego and Rua Dona Filipa de Vilhena. Street parking is also available around the neighborhood.
