As part of the What I Wish I Knew Then, a series of free lunchtime talks for Melbourne Design Week, design editor, journalist and communications strategist Alice Blackwood hosts a conversation exploring the journey to become an industrial designer, considering how industrial designers navigate the various challenges and opportunities of their careers.
What I Wish I Knew Then pairs emerging designers with experienced industry leaders for candid, cross-generational conversations. Each session is moderated by an expert and explores lessons learned, creative risks, and pivotal career moments, offering insight, inspiration.

Alice Blackwood
Alice Blackwood is a design editor, journalist, communications strategist and experienced public speaker. For 20 years sheโs passionately advocated for the Australian architecture and design industry. She served as Editor of Indesign magazine and Indesignlive.com until 2023. Alice has been integral in establishing numerous major platforms that recognise and celebrate the regionโs most exciting architecture and design, elevating its industry leaders into the global spotlight.
Nicole Lawrence Studio
Nicole Lawrence Studio exists as a study of the graphic form materialised. Drawing on a decade of experience in industrial design and manufacturing, Nicoleโs vision is to create unique products that are placed with pride and go the distance. Offering contemporary furniture and lighting design, Nicoleโs projects and commissions are made to order in and around Nicoleโs studio in Melbourne, Australia. Allowing the capacity for customisation, clients can collaborate with Nicole directly to ensure the scale, colour and function is perfectly suited to their space.
Volker Haug Studio
Volker Haug Studio is a decorative lighting practice based in Melbourne. A skilled team of designers and makers work to create lighting informed by a sense of discovery and experimentation. With a focus on pared back, immaculate designs filled with a sense of playfulness and individuality, the studio has established a tradition of producing elegant, finely detailed pieces.
