Guest Speaker:Dr. Bryan Franks

Marine Science Research Institute of Jacksonville University
Bryan Franks is a marine ecologist, currently serving as the Interim Director of the Marine Science Research Institute at Jacksonville University, the Graduate Program Director, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology & Marine Science. Research in his lab focuses on multiple aspects of shark biology and ecology including habitat use, movements & migration, predator-prey dynamics, and ecosystem function. Past and current research include examining nursery area use in coastal sharks, spatio-temporal shifts in behavior and feeding, and the anthropogenic impacts on shark populations. This work spans from inshore to offshore and from Atlantic Canada to the Gulf of Mexico including work with OCEARCH on white shark behavioral ecology. While most of his current work focuses on elasmobranch biology and ecology, he has prior experience studying tortoises in the Mojave Desert, snakes in temperate forests, and sea turtles in Costa Rica. He has previously served as the Managing Director of the Bimini Biological Field Station and as a faculty member at Rollins College and Florida Southern College before arriving at JU in 2017. In addition to research activities, Bryan teaches multiple courses in the Marine Science programs and serves on a number of Boards of regional, national, and international organizations.
Pre-registration is greatly appreciated and closes at noon the day before. Walk-up cost is $40 for everyone and seating is not guaranteed.
