About this Event

This portrait photography workshop is for you if you are:
  • looking to tell your colleagues “Hey, I’m busy during lunch. I am doing a workshop with this photographer who photographed Gigi, Bella Hadid and other supermodels.” ;)
  • looking for new photos for your dating profile (dating results not guaranteed)
  • looking for a reason to wear or buy nice clothes
  • looking for some photography tips so you can build your social media profile whether you are an artist, model, musician, chef, influencer, or any other creative

Theme: Each workshop has a unique theme. The theme for this workshop is natural light.

Introduction

This workshop is held twice a month, with a limit of 5 participants per workshop. Each workshop begins with the basics then dives into a different theme, so you are welcome to join whether you are participating for the first time or returning for another session.

  • 2nd Sunday of each month 12:30-1:30pm: Regent’s Park
  • 4th Wednesday of each month 12:30-1:30pm: Savile Row in Mayfair

Exact meeting point and indoor backup locations will be shared with participants after booking. Depending on availability, additional workshops will be announced if fully booked. For 1-2-1 classes, corporate workshops, and other bespoke offerings email [email protected].

Agenda

Each workshop is 60 minutes. We will dedicate 15 minutes to the basics with tailored photography exercises based on your previous experience. We will discuss:

  • Scouting a good location
  • Working with natural and external lights
  • Framing and photography angles
  • Background and distance
  • Ethics and credits

Participants will then break off into 2 groups for 30 minutes and focus on the workshop’s theme. Activities include:

  • Photographing each other. Selfies welcome but I encourage you to bring a tripod or a selfie stick, which will give you more options from a photography point of view. You are also welcome to sign up with a friend so you can focus on photographing each other, but you each require your own ticket.
  • Photography demo by M. Freddy (optional). I will take a polaroid of you and you will receive a digital scan of the polaroid for online use only e.g. website or social media, with credits to M. Freddy.
  • Photography review. Discuss what is / is not working in the photographs taken during the session.

We will leave 15 minutes open for any Q&As, chats, exchanges, and networking.

Equipment

All you need to bring is yourself and your (fully charged) phone! I will bring some photography lights to support the class. I may bring a phone charger but it is always better to make sure your phone is charged.

To ensure everyone has access to their photos by the end of the session, all participants are asked to photograph with their phones only. I am happy to support DSLR / mirrorless cameras if you sign up with a friend who also uses DSLR / mirrorless cameras, and the two of you can exchange photos privately after the session. If you are bringing a friend, you each require your own ticket.

I moved from New York to London not too long ago. After my book tour came to a close, I decided I wanted to go back to my contemporary art practice part-time. I have had an electic career: in tech and research, at the United Nations, but I was also a fashion week photographer at one point. I hold a B.F.A. from the Parsons School of Design, and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University. I was a Departmental Visiting Student at the University of Oxford as well. Photography is a lot of fun! Nowadays I focus on polaroids, but the principles of photography apply no matter what you use to photograph with. I also co-organize the Instant Film as Contemporary Art Monthly Series, which is a free online community-building event that features renown guest speakers.

  • "Your artworks are gems" Marguerite Van Cook, Ph.D., Musician who opened for The Clash and gallerist who exhibited Sol LeWitt and David Wojnarowicz
  • "[A]n artist unafraid to deal with massive complexities" James Romberger, East Village artist with works in collections such as the Met in New York
