Using newly declassified files, preserved court records, and archival collections such as the Municipal Archives’ , Viola delves into the untold history of domestic terrorism and political radicalism that shook New York City in the 1960s and 70s. He will reveal how these records illuminate the city’s rapid transition from postwar prosperity to turmoil and highlight the NYPD’s role in navigating this era of radical violence.

About the Speaker:

David Viola is an Adjunct Professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City and completed his Ph.D. in U.S. and Middle Eastern History at the CUNY Graduate Center in 2017. In early 2025, HarperCollins/Hanover Square Press will release his first book, You Have Unleashed a Storm: New York City’s Descent into Chaos During America’s Most Explosive Era of Radical Violence, which explores the historic surge in political bombings in New York during the 1970s and the excessive efforts by NYPD and the FBI to hunt the responsible extremists. Dr. Viola is also an Intelligence Office in the U.S. Navy Reserve and is currently mobilized to Active Duty in Europe in support of U.S. Special Operations Forces.
