Travel back in time and explore the world of the early 1900s from the perspectives of mathematician and bibliophile Dr. David Eugene Smith and his wife, Fanny! Using the collection of over 2,000 postcards sent to Helen Jewett McAleer by her “Uncle D” and Aunt Fanny during their travels around the globe between the years 1898 and 1912, this program will highlight how postcards are a window into the lives of the sender and receiver, as well as into the experiences of early twentieth-century tourists.
Sophie Clough is the Collections and Research Assistant at the Cortland County Historical Society and was responsible for obtaining a grant to digitize the Helen Jewett McAleer postcard collection, which is available on New York Heritage.
Bring your own lunch if you wish, and we will provide a beverage and dessert. Admission is free for members of the Cortland County Historical Society (CCHS) and $5 for CCHS members-to-be.
This event will take place at the Harris Hall, former Free Methodist Church at 9 Grace Street, Cortland.
Please call 607-756-6071 with any questions.
