Join us for lunch and learn with Sam Ellyson as we explore how a symbol of persecution became a beacon of pride and liberation.During their twelve-year reign, the Nazis used a color-coded system of triangle badges to identify concentration camp prisoners—LGBTQ individuals were marked with the pink triangle. But this story doesn't end with oppression. Beginning in the 1970s, queer activists reclaimed this symbol, transforming it from a badge of shame into a global rallying cry for liberation, community and pride.
The Pink Triangle Legacies Project honors the LGBTQ lives lost in the Holocaust by documenting their stories, writing biographies of those who perished and creating educational resources for classrooms and communities worldwide.
Research Assistant Sam Ellyson from The Reiff Center for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution at Christopher Newport University will share the project's origins, methodology and the powerful work of documenting and honoring these forgotten lives.
Come ready to engage, learn and remember. This is more than history—it's a story of transformation, resilience and the power of reclaiming our narratives.
