About this Event

Bring a bagged lunch and join Member Lee Ashcroft at the Carpenter Museum for an engaging discussion of the document that founded our nation.

As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, this presentation explores why the Declaration of Independence was written, the ideas and arguments it contains, its contradictions, and the economic, intellectual, and cultural forces that shaped the colonies' break from Britain. We'll also examine how the Declaration was drafted and edited into one of history's most influential documents.

Lee Ashcroft is a member of the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society and its 250th Committee. A dedicated history enthusiast, he has presented programs including Rhode Island History 101, The Pilgrim Experience, and Rhode Island in the Revolutionary Era.

The program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Tilton Room at the Carpenter Museum, 4 Locust Avenue, Rehoboth. Drinks will be provided; please bring your own lunch. Admission is free, and registration is encouraged.

After the program, explore the Carpenter Museum's current exhibit highlighting Rehoboth's role during the American Revolution and discover how our community contributed to the founding of the nation.

This program is presented by the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society's 250th Committee in partnership with the Carpenter Museum in honor of America's Semiquincentennial.
