In this informal lecture, Lauren Goodlad describes the Design Justice Labs approach to teaching critical AI literacies, an approach that emphasizes student- and community-centered learning about technology and the design of digital tools informed by the needs and interests of the people who are expected to use them. As a resource for teaching critical AI literacies, the Design Justice Labs approach emphasizes enabling students to approach digital tools as researchers rather than users.
Bio:
Lauren M.E. Goodlad is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Rutgers, the chair of the interdisciplinary Critical AI @ Rutgers initiative, and the editor of Critical AI (published by Duke UP). Goodlad's research in critical AI studies has been funded by the NEH, the NSF, and the Mellon-CHCI. Her work on DESIGN JUSTICE LABS, a web platform for the sharing of resources for teaching critical AI literacies is ongoing.
