Black Editions Presents and Angel City Arts present and evening with British composer and cellist Lucy Railton along with the duo of Japanese avant-garde jazz pianist, composer Satoko Fujii and Japanese trumpeter, composer Kappa Maki.Lucy Railton presents a visceral live set drawing on music from her Modern Love release “Corner Dancer”, bridging experimental electronic and electroacoustic practices with the conventions of new music, employing a deep consideration of sound and its properties, implementing cello and antiquated string instruments, analog and digital synthesizers, drum machines and voice—and exploring alternate tuning systems, psychoacoustic phenomena, and timbral control.
Railton is a British, Berlin based cellist, composer and curator working internationally in sound, dance, film and installation since 2007. She has released music on labels Modern Love, Editions Mego - GRM Portraits, PAN (with Peter Zinovieff), Shelter Press, Ideologic Organ and ECM, and currently collaborates on projects with Shō player Michiko Ogawa ‘Fragments of Reincarnation’, Kali Malone and Stephen O’Malley ‘Does Spring Hide Its Joy’, Soundwalk Collective with Patti Smith ‘Correspondences’, Derek Jarman’s ‘BLUE’ live with Simon Fisher Turner, presentations of Maryanne Amacher’s electroacoustic work ‘GLIA’ and as a member of the Berlin ensemble 'Harmonic Space'.
Pianist and composer Satoko Fujii, “an improviser of rumbling intensity and generous restraint” (Giovanni Russonello, New York Times), is one of the most original voices in jazz today. For more than 25 years, she has created a unique, personal music that spans many genres, blending jazz, contemporary classical, rock, and traditional Japanese music into an innovative synthesis instantly recognizable as hers alone. A prolific composer for ensembles of all sizes and a performer who has appeared around the world, she was the recipient of a 2020 Instant Award in Improvised Music, in recognition of her “artistic intelligence, independence, and integrity.”
Trumpeter and composer Kappa Maki is internationally recognized for a unique musical vocabulary that blends jazz lyricism with extended techniques. In addition to appearing with many of Fujii’s projects and recordings, he is a leader in his own right. 2003 was a breakout year for Maki as a bandleader, with the release of Hada Hada (Libra), featuring his free jazz-avant rock quartet with Fujii on synthesizer. In 2005, he made a 180-degree turn with the debut of his all-acoustic Gato Libre quartet, focusing on the intersection of European folk music and sound abstraction. Now a trio, their most recent CD is Koneko (Libra), was released in 2020. Writing in the New York City Jazz Record, Tyran Grillo said, “By turns mysterious and whimsical.”
Since 1997, Fujii and Maki’s powerful collaboration has enlightened and engaged listeners. Their repertoire ranges from total improvisation to Maki’s deeply beautiful, world-music influenced compositions and Fujii’s compositions with their complicating meter, line, and harmony. With just two instruments, they can create anything from a quiet Japanese traditional song to the blast of a crazy large ensemble. They have wowed audiences at jazz festivals in London, Vancouver, Italy, and Montreal and other venues around the world.
