About this Event

Join acclaimed photographer, curator, and visual historian Luis C. Garza for a compelling conversation about documenting one of the most transformative periods in Los Angeles history. Beginning as a young photojournalist in the late 1960s, Garza used his camera to chronicle the Chicano civil rights movement, capturing powerful moments of protest, celebration, community, and everyday life that have become an indispensable visual record of Mexican American history.

Drawing from more than five decades behind the lens, Garza will share the stories behind some of his most iconic photographs, reflect on the responsibility of photographers to preserve cultural memory, and discuss the evolving role of photography in shaping historical narratives. He will also discuss his ongoing efforts to preserve his archive, a journey documented in the award-winning short film Razón de Ser: Luis C. Garza. His work is currently featured in Chicano Camera Culture: A Photographic History, 1966–2026 and We the People: Chicano Art in the U.S.A. at The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture, while his solo exhibition The Other Side of Memory: Photographs by Luis C. Garza continues its national tour.

The presentation will conclude with a Q&A, followed by a book signing of The Other Side of Memory and an opportunity to view and purchase Garza’s photographs during the Lucie Foundation Open House.

Whether you are a photographer, collector, student, or lover of visual storytelling, this is a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from an artist whose photographs have helped shape the visual history of the Chicano experience in America.
