Long before klezmer echoed through the shtetls of Eastern Europe, Ashkenazi Jewish culture was born in the medieval Rhine Valley, where Jewish and Christian musical traditions grew side by side for centuries. On June 11, Shtetl Berlin presents a rare evening devoted to these deep and often-forgotten roots. Two of the world's foremost early Jewish music ensembles — Simkhat Hanefesh and Ensemble Lucidarium — bring to life songs, dances, and liturgical melodies from Renaissance and Baroque Germany and Italy. This is repertoire that almost no one else in the world performs, and that reveals just how intertwined Jewish and Christian musical cultures once were, long before the road east. The evening begins at 18:00 with a short pre-concert talk by the performers on stage, offering a window into their research and the remarkable historical world their music inhabits.
Simkhat Hanefesh (Joy of the Soul) is a Berlin-based ensemble dedicated to the performance and research of early Ashkenazi Jewish music. Drawing on historical manuscripts, synagogue traditions, and the rich crossroads of German Jewish and European court music, the ensemble performs on period instruments and brings together musicological depth with genuine artistic warmth. Ensemble Lucidarium is an internationally acclaimed Italian early music ensemble specializing in medieval and Renaissance repertoire at the boundaries of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Based in Milan, they have spent decades excavating the musical encounters of pre-expulsion Jewish Europe, producing recordings and research that have reshaped how scholars and audiences understand the deep roots of Jewish musical culture.

Lange vor dem Klezmer, der durch die Schtetl Osteuropas hallte, entstand die aschkenasische jüdische Kultur im mittelalterlichen Rheinland — wo jüdische und christliche Musiktraditionen jahrhundertelang Seite an Seite wuchsen. Am 11. Juni präsentiert Shtetl Berlin einen seltenen Abend, der diesen tiefen und oft vergessenen Wurzeln gewidmet ist. Zwei der weltweit bedeutendsten Ensembles für frühe jüdische Musik — Simkhat Hanefesh und Ensemble Lucidarium — erwecken Lieder, Tänze und Liturgien aus dem jüdischen Europa der Renaissance und des Barock zum Leben. Dieses Repertoire führt kaum jemand sonst auf der Welt auf, und es zeigt, wie eng jüdische und christliche Musikkultur einst miteinander verwoben waren — lange vor dem Weg nach Osten. Der Abend beginnt um 18:00 Uhr mit einem kurzen Einführungsgespräch der Ensembles auf der Bühne.
Simkhat Hanefesh (Freude der Seele) ist ein in Berlin beheimatetes Ensemble, das sich der Aufführung und Erforschung früher aschkenasischer jüdischer Musik widmet. Auf historischen Instrumenten spielend, verbindet das Ensemble musikwissenschaftliche Tiefe mit echtem künstlerischem Ausdruck und schöpft aus Manuskripten, Synagogentraditionen und der reichen Begegnung jüdischer und europäischer Hofmusik. Ensemble Lucidarium ist ein international anerkanntes italienisches Ensemble für Alte Musik, das sich auf mittelalterliches und Renaissance-Repertoire an den Schnittstellen jüdischer, christlicher und islamischer Tradition spezialisiert hat. Mit Sitz in Mailand haben sie jahrzehntelang die musikalischen Begegnungen des vorexilischen jüdischen Europas erforscht und damit das Verständnis der Wurzeln jüdischer Musikkultur neu geprägt.
