About this Event

Celebrate your body—the Temple of the Spirit—rooted in Mother Earth!

Whether you're a beginner or experienced, this class is designed for all levels, with a progression that builds confidence step by step. Dance Instructor Lua Shayenne, based in Toronto, Canada, is a dedicated student of traditional Mandé dances and rhythms. Her workshops seamlessly integrate song, cultural insights, and percussion, offering a thorough breakdown of each move to help you connect with the music, the culture, and your body.

Through the rhythmic pulse of percussion, participants are invited to celebrate the body’s connection to the Earth, embracing Breath, Ground, Inner Rhythm, and Flow. The practice honors the spirit and energy within, moving in harmony with the rich traditions of West African dance.

Participants can dance in socks or barefeet for this workshop.

The workshops happen in the West Wing, a public space located to the west of the Great Hall at Union Station. The workshop will be hosted on a 32’ x 20’ Marley dance floor set up in the West Wing, as a way to offer access to the general public, to both witness and participate in dance workshops and performances during FFDN’s 2025 festival. Please note that as such, the space can be noisy and at certain times there is heavy foot traffic. Union Station will provide security for the event. Please limit what you bring to Union Station, and do not bring any valuables.
