About this Event
Adding Life to Our Years: Intermittent Fasting and Longevity
Over the past century, global life expectancy has nearly doubled. Meanwhile, healthspan, or our years of healthy life, has not increased at the same rate. While people are living longer, most of us will spend a disproportionately longer time living with an age-related disability, such as dementia. This growing disparity between lifespan and healthspan has tremendous social and economic impacts. Join LSU Science Café to learn how dietary fasting practices, including caloric restriction and intermittent fasting, are unlocking secrets to helping us live healthier longer.
Alyssa Johnson is an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at LSU. Her lab studies the mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases in invertebrate model organisms, such as fruit flies and worms. Her lab is currently funded by an R35 Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, and a biomedical research grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation. Johnson earned her Ph.D. in cell and developmental biology from Vanderbilt University in 2013.
