Formé en 2005 sur la côte nord de la Californie, LSD and the Search for God s’impose rapidement comme une référence du shoegaze américain. Le groupe construit sa réputation à San Francisco grâce à des concerts hypnotiques, entre guitares tourbillonnantes, nappes drones, mélodies pop saturées et harmonies vocales rêveuses.
Comparé dès ses débuts à My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Yo La Tengo ou Sonic Youth, le quatuor devient un pilier du revival shoegaze de la fin des années 2000. Son premier EP éponyme (2007), réédité en 2025, s’écoule avant même sa sortie officielle et figure aujourd’hui parmi les sorties essentielles du genre. Le titre Starting Over, avec ses voix immergées et ses murs de guitares en expansion, est devenu un hymne moderne du shoegaze.
En 2016, Heaven Is a Place confirme l’ampleur du projet : un second EP salué par la critique, qui affine encore leur équilibre entre fuzz, reverb et envolées psychédéliques. Entre vulnérabilité et déflagrations sonores, LSD and the Search for God continue de cultiver un univers dense, immersif et intensément mélodique.

LSD and the Search for God, opgericht in 2005 aan de noordkust van Californië, groeide al snel uit tot een van de belangrijkste namen in de Amerikaanse shoegaze. De band bouwde zijn reputatie in San Francisco op dankzij hypnotiserende optredens, met wervelende gitaren, drone-klanken, verzadigde popmelodieën en dromerige zangharmonieën. Het kwartet, dat vanaf het begin werd vergeleken met my bloody valentine, Slowdive, Yo La Tengo en Sonic Youth, werd een steunpilaar van de shoegaze-revival van eind jaren 2000.
Hun eerste gelijknamige EP (2007), die in 2025 opnieuw werd uitgebracht, was al uitverkocht nog voor de officiële release en behoort vandaag de dag tot de essentiële releases van het genre. Het nummer ‘Starting Over’, met zijn ondergedompelde zang en uitdijende gitaarmuren, is een moderne shoegaze-hymne geworden. In 2016 bevestigt ‘Heaven is a Place’ de omvang van het project: een door critici geprezen tweede EP, die hun balans tussen fuzz, reverb en psychedelische uitbarstingen nog verder verfijnt. Tussen kwetsbaarheid en geluidsexplosies blijft LSD and the Search for God een compact, meeslepend en intens melodieus universum creëren.
