BRING JOY TO LEARNING
Sterne School’s small class sizes and integrated supports are designed to amplify each student’s strengths. Sterne is an inclusive school where neurodiverse learners thrive. We offer creative, hands-on, project-based learning, combined with a college preparatory curriculum and a full complement of enriching student life opportunities.
Sterne's small class sizes give students the opportunity to truly connect with subject matter, teachers, and peers. Our faculty helps students build academic stamina, develop executive function skills, and engage in social-emotional learning. Whether your student is struggling with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, anxiety, or if your child simply thrives in a more tight-knit school community, Sterne celebrates each student's uniqueness and brings joy to learning.
STERNE'S LOWER & MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 4–8)
Lower school marks the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” For students with literacy, math, and attentional challenges, school can feel overwhelming. Sterne’s strengths-based, nurturing approach focuses on the abilities and interests of these young learners. A dynamic, project-based learning model provides opportunities for students to receive support as they solve problems, apply creative thinking strategies, and discover the joy in learning. From 4th–8th grade, dyslexic learners benefit from phonics-based, structured literacy intervention in small groups and in whole-class models.
Knowing that no two students are alike, our model celebrates the uniqueness of each student’s learning profile. In our dynamic and engaging environment, students explore passions and strengths through inquiry-based learning and hands-on activities. Students are placed into courses according to their instructional needs rather than traditional grade level groupings. Academic interventions are part of our integrated learning model so that minimal scaffolding from the outside is needed—no “pull outs” or “school after school.” Student leadership, mentorship, and enrichment activities provide opportunities to build focus, grow confidence, and develop friendships.
Located in the heart of San Francisco, Sterne's campus features state-of-the-art facilities, including a new Performing Arts & Athletics Center housing a digital film studio, a black box theater, a music practice and recording studio, and full gymnasium. We provide competitive and recreational athletics offerings open to every grade and ability level; dozens of student clubs and affinity groups; Expedition Days and experiential learning trips; leadership opportunities, community service, electives, social events, and afterschool enrichment. All Sterne students have a wealth of opportunities to discover new interests through our student life programs that offer something for everyone.
