Low Yo Yo Stuff & Hooker Vision Presents: Night Sky Body / Lea Lea / Space Brother
NIGHT SKY BODY
Frank Baugh continues to be one of the most unique voices in the American underground. With his longtime project, Sparkling Wide Pressure, laid to rest, Night Sky Body (the title of a 2016 SWP tape) continues the guitar-and-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink/stream-of-consciousness/dream-journal-vocals of his former project and turns up the darkness. Like if Boredoms became a moon-worshipping goth band playing shows at the Twin Peaks Roadhouse, or if Coil had picked up Sonic Youth's guitars instead of synthesizers, Night Sky Body deftly conjures up a singular vision of noisy, dark, strange, gorgeous outsider music. If "Songs In The Key Of Z" were to receive an update, Baugh's work would surely be included. LEA LEA
Athens-based green thumb Lea just released a set of recordings made between 2014 and 2015, sometimes in her room, sometimes outside, while she was working on set. This EP out earlier this Spring on Hooker Vision is the best kind of secret bedroom pop. Folk-centric guitar picking, thick layered vocal looping, lullaby-style melodies dripping from the tree tops. Like sleepwalking through a waterfall at night and into a cave-maze, frolicking and wandering until you reach an exit at the top of a mountain, then taking a leap into the dark sky; becoming a new constellation. For fans of Joanna Newsom's "The Sprout and the Bean" vocal and lyrical sensibility with Grooper's "I'd rather be sleeping" low-fi reverb-soaked shoegazing-haze, mixed with Animal Collective's early acoustic rhythms (think "Leaf House") and Bjork's Medulla-era all vox sampling palette. This collection was nearly-not due to an unfortunate loss, and only these tracks remain. We're delighted and honored to re-issue SHEYET, previously only available digitally, in a proper albeit limited edition run of cassette tapes. We know you'll get lost in it just like we did! Tapes are nearly sold out!! And Lea Lea is on a roll with recent shows including Waggle Fest earlier this year and a Work.shop at Echo Base performance supporting Mere of Light and Skirr Trio. SPACE BROTHER
Athens, GA native Donald Whitehead is no stranger to the DIY and tape underground shows around town. He's been a mover and a shaker for years dating back to Hooker Vision's release of his previous band's cassette Future Ape Tapes in 2014. True to that band's aesthetic, Donald continues to demonstrate his ability to aptly shape-shifter, always delivering otherworldly vibes with psychedelic sounds regardless of a band, a collaborator, or alone. Indeed his solo works and performances as Space Brother capture more of the sublime aspects of the Future Ape Tape zones, leaving behind the more chaotic moments and solidifying the psychonaut-meets-intelligence-dance-music-sound-scapes. On his latest endeavor - with cassette about to release on Hooker Vision next month - Donald channels Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada minimal-ambient textures to craft his own excursion to the Moon of his mind. His set at this Hooker Vision showcase is sure to be as memorable as his tracks! Listen to his solo discography at: https://spacebrother.bandcamp.com/ and keep an eye out for the upcoming HV release...
