Join us for this interactive, sensory-friendly project on Sunday, October 20, 2024 from 12pm-4pm at the Halifax Public Gardens.
"Quilted Canopies," an interactive installation by Shayla Bond and Anne Kobayashi, brings tranquility and a sense of shared community to Halifax's bustling Spring Garden area. This unique project introduces three circular play parachutes, varying in size—6’, 12’, and 20’—crafted from up-cycled boat sails and nylon fabric. Each parachute is designed to accommodate groups of varying sizes, allowing participants to engage in a collective act of lifting and gathering beneath the billowed canopies. This interaction creates serene, low-sensory havens that serve as microcosms of tranquility amidst urban chaos.
Presented in as part of Nocturne 2024: Microcosm, curated by Shuvanjan Karmaker.

About the Artists:
Shayla Bond & Anne Kobayashi:
Toronto-based artists Anne Kobayashi and Shayla Bond each bring their distinct perspectives to a shared passion for the arts. Anne graduated from Queen's University with a BFA in installation sculpture and has previously exhibited at the Bata Shoe Museum during Nuit Blanche. Shayla, originally from Nova Scotia and a graduate of NSCAD, specializes in textiles. She aims to modernize and expand the appeal of heritage crafts through her bespoke quilt label, ESBE.
Together, Kobayashi and Bond engage in a creative dialogue that blends rigorous experimentation and play with a deep respect for traditional crafts. Their project for Halifax's Nocturne aims to offer a multisensory experience, merging their individual artistic narratives to tackle this year’s festival theme of Microcosms in a playful and inclusive manner.
