MGM’s adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, retitled Love, is remembered as much for the legendary romance between its stars as for the story itself. Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated screen couples, bring extraordinary chemistry to this lavish production.
Though the film departs from Tolstoy’s original novel, it remains a stunning showcase of Garbo’s artistry and screen presence at the height of the silent era. At just 22, Garbo was already celebrated not only for her beauty but for her depth as a dramatic performer.
As Time wrote in 1927, “It isn’t Tolstoy, but it is John Gilbert and Greta Garbo, beautifully presented and magnificently acted.”
Part of the Carolina Theatre’s 2026–27 Silent Film Series, featuring live organ accompaniment by Mark Andersen on the original 1927 Robert Morton Theatre Pipe Organ. Installed when the theatre opened, the Robert Morton accompanied silent films during the Carolina’s earliest years and remains one of the few theatre organs still in its original home.
