Join Asheville Watchdog and a panel of Black community leaders for an important conversation about The Watchdog’s four-part series, “Losing Our Soul: Why Asheville’s Black Population Keeps Shrinking.”

The panelists and our moderator, reporter and columnist John Boyle, will discuss the ongoing decline of Asheville's African American population, its causes – both past and present – and its social, economic and cultural implications for our city.

When: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025

Where: The Dr. Wesley Grant Sr. Southside Community Center, 285 Livingston Street Asheville 28801

The event’s panelists will be:

Dwight Mullen, former University of North Carolina Asheville political science professor and former chair of the Buncombe-Asheville Community Reparations Commission

Sheneika Smith, Asheville City Council member and founder and executive director of nonprofit Sistas Caring 4 Sistas

Antanette Mosley, Asheville Vice Mayor and Attorney

Priscilla Robinson, Urban Renewal Activist

Sekou Coleman, Community Organizer

There will be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions of the panel. The event is free, but because seating is limited, registration is required. Doors open at 6. Program starts in the auditorium at 6:30.
This live event is a conclusion to Asheville Watchdog's four-part series: "Losing Our Soul: Why Asheville's Black Population Keeps Shrinking." You can explore the series every Sunday for four weeks, starting October 19, at Asheville Watchdog's website.
