In late 2021 through early 2022, a crew of three, led by Mario A. Hernández, painted a mural at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes called “Los Angeles, 1853.” Based on a chromolithograph created by Charles Koppel, an artist on the Robert S. Williamson expedition of 1853 of the U.S. Pacific Railroad Surveys, it reimagines one of the earliest views of Los Angeles, looking east from Fort Moore Hill to the west. At its center is El Aliso, an ancient sycamore tree known that was meeting place where people gathered. Learn how the mural was conceived and executed in a lively presentation that includes sketches, photographs and videos.
