ABOUT THE BOOK

A small Connecticut town is reeling after a beloved high school football player is killed in a hit-and-run accident, and Hannah suspects that her older brother Rob and his best friend Zach, her crush, may be responsible. As the police investigation into the hit and run unfolds, Hannah vows to protect her brother and Zach, who over the course of the novel becomes her first boyfriend, but she is burdened by the weight of the secret she must keep. Tensions mount as Hannah learns that she and Rob are not the only ones in the family with a secret, as her friends turn against her, and as two different versions of the truth about the accident emerge, making Hannah question everything and forcing her to decide where her loyalties lie. With her brother? Or with her boyfriend? THE ACCIDENT is about choices and consequences, secrets and lies, and what happens when you follow your heart instead of your conscience.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lori Miller Kase is an award-winning journalist, short story writer, essayist, and young adult author. Her work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, The Atlantic, Vogue, and Literary Mama. Lori studied creative writing at Brown University and at Wesleyan University, where she earned a Master’s degree, and occasionally teaches it to elementary through high school students. A member of both the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and the American Society of Journalists and Authors, Lori has received several awards for Excellence in Journalism from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists and The Letter Review Prize for Short Fiction. Her young adult novel, The Accident, was the 2024 YA finalist for the Tassy Walden Awards for New Voices in Children’s Literature, and is forthcoming from Woodhall Press in October, 2025.
